Learning Grant Stories 2016/17
Warman High School
Learning Grant application: Outdoor Education Program
Teachers: Peter Schmidt and Sean Brandt
Grant received: $4,500
Warman High School has an established Outdoor Education Program, offering Environmental Science 20 and Physical Education 20 to Grade 11 students. The school applied for a Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Learning Grant to expand the program to both semesters to allow more students to participate in the course.
The Outdoor Education Program offers relevant experiential learning, engaging science activities in the local environment and an awareness of environmental sustainability issues. This program takes students out of their comfort zone and encourages them to lead active lifestyles.
The Learning Grant was used to cover the program’s travel costs for a variety of activities, including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, camping and canoeing.
“This class brought me closer to everyone, I’ve made closer friends than going into the semester. I also learned a lot of new skills that will help me in life, I definitely plan to use survival skills in the wild in my life. I learned that things are much easier and way more fun with cool people, I could walk a lot farther than I thought I could, and it was a blast.”
Leask Community School
Learning Grant Application: Building better learners – Lego Club
Teacher: Shannon Sirois
Grant Received: $5,000
Leask Community School applied for a Learning Grant to engage students through the use of Lego. The school envisioned using Lego in four ways:
- in Math, ELA, Science and Art classrooms;
- as a gateway to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities, such as building catapults and water dams;
- through robotics (Lego Mindstorm)
- as a tool for Genius Hour and to introduce makerspace to the students
Leask used their Learning Grant to purchase three Lego EV3 Robots (senior math and science classes), a variety of curricular-based Lego kits specifically geared to Math, ELA and Science, general Lego kits and Lego base plates to create a Lego wall.
“We look forward to implementing more Lego into classroom curriculum in the upcoming year. As part of our year kick off, all LCS staff will take part in a professional development meeting to learn about incorporating Lego into their classroom. Staff will take part in completed lessons to spark their imagination and leave the meeting with a completed lesson plan that they can implement in their own classroom.
We hope to open the MakerSpace at lunch hours to students where they will be able to take part in weekly Lego challenges on our Lego wall.”

2019/20 Learning Grants
2019/20 Learning Grant Recipients
The Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation is continuing its support of innovative learning opportunities for students in Prairie Spirit School Division by providing over $34,000 in Learning Grants for the 2019/20 school year.
The Foundation’s Learning Grants Program is designed to support student learning in Prairie Spirit School Division, with an emphasis on student engagement and relevant learning opportunities, by enhancing current Division programs and resources.
“Working closely with the Division, we are able to promote and foster enhanced learning opportunities for Prairie Spirit students throughout the Division,” said Kari Dean, Fund Development Manager for Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation. “Since February 2017, our Learning Grants Program has contributed $136,000 to Prairie Spirit schools and students.”
Applications for the 2019/20 Learning Grants opened in June. A selection committee consisting of members of the Foundation’s Board and Prairie Spirit Learning Superintendents reviewed all applications and approved 13 submissions.
“Our purpose as a Foundation is to extend and enrich the learning opportunities available to the students in our Division. We know as a result of our Learning Grants we significantly impact students by providing and empowering them with additional resources, training and tools to further achieve and often exceed their learning goals. For this reason, we will continue to reach out to our community partners, sponsors and donors. Without their commitment, we know opportunities like Learning Grants would not be possible,” said Michael Wright, Board Chair, Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation.
The list of the 2019/20 Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Learning Grant Recipients can be found here: 2019/20 Prairie Spirit Schools Learning Grant Recipients.
