Learning Grant Stories 2016/17

Warman High School
Learning Grant application: Outdoor Education Program
Teachers: Peter Schmidt and Sean Brandt
Grant received: $4,500

Warman High School has an established Outdoor Education Program, offering Environmental Science 20 and Physical Education 20 to Grade 11 students. The school applied for a Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Learning Grant to expand the program to both semesters to allow more students to participate in the course.

The Outdoor Education Program offers relevant experiential learning, engaging science activities in the local environment and an awareness of environmental sustainability issues. This program takes students out of their comfort zone and encourages them to lead active lifestyles.

The Learning Grant was used to cover the program’s travel costs for a variety of activities, including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, camping and canoeing.

Student reflection:

“This class brought me closer to everyone, I’ve made closer friends than going into the semester. I also learned a lot of new skills that will help me in life, I definitely plan to use survival skills in the wild in my life. I learned that things are much easier and way more fun with cool people, I could walk a lot farther than I thought I could, and it was a blast.”

Leask Community School
Learning Grant Application: Building better learners – Lego Club
Teacher: Shannon Sirois
Grant Received: $5,000

Leask Community School applied for a Learning Grant to engage students through the use of Lego. The school envisioned using Lego in four ways:

  1. in Math, ELA, Science and Art classrooms;
  2. as a gateway to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities, such as building catapults and water dams;
  3. through robotics (Lego Mindstorm)
  4. as a tool for Genius Hour and to introduce makerspace to the students

Leask used their Learning Grant to purchase three Lego EV3 Robots (senior math and science classes), a variety of curricular-based Lego kits specifically geared to Math, ELA and Science, general Lego kits and Lego base plates to create a Lego wall.

Teacher Reflection:

“We look forward to implementing more Lego into classroom curriculum in the upcoming year. As part of our year kick off, all LCS staff will take part in a professional development meeting to learn about incorporating Lego into their classroom. Staff will take part in completed lessons to spark their imagination and leave the meeting with a completed lesson plan that they can implement in their own classroom.

We hope to open the MakerSpace at lunch hours to students where they will be able to take part in weekly Lego challenges on our Lego wall.”

Learning Grants

Overview

We are looking to support learning innovations which have the potential to expand to other students, classrooms and schools in the school division and which focus on enhanced student engagement by empowering young people to explore their passions and create change in their classrooms, their schools and their community.  Learning Grant requests will be accepted to a maximum of $5,000.

Eligibility

PSSF Learning Grant requests are open for all students registered at a school in the Prairie Spirit School Division. This includes individual students, student groups, classrooms and entire school communities. All requests are to be made through the school on the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation 2017-2018 Learning Grant Request Form and must include at least one Teacher Leader and be supported by the In School Administrator.

Submission Deadline

Completed Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation 2017 – 2018 Learning Grant Request Forms are to be submitted to psfoundation@spiritsd.ca by December 15, 2017.
Note: Late submissions will not be accepted.

Desired Request Details

We value Learning Grant requests where:
• Students are supported to seek new perspectives, create new knowledge and are actively engaged in their own learning.
• Learning is relevant, rigourous and involves risk taking. This includes a connection to their lives now and in the future and involves critical thinking, inquiry and real world problem solving.
• Learning environments support students to collaborate within and outside the classroom: learning side by side, strengthening community partnerships and leveraging community resources.

Selection Process

Grant recipients and amounts will be determined by the Prairie Spirit Schools Foundation Learning Grants Selection Committee by January 15, 2018. All applicants will be notified of the status of their request after that date. Applicants may be contacted prior to a decision being made to seek clarity regarding their request.

PSSF 3rd Annual Golf Classic – Follow-Up

Our third annual Golf Classic was a great success once again. Many thanks to our sponsors, golfers and prize donors!  We had a record number of student sponsors which allowed six students to golf, the Warman High School band amazed us with their talents during the cocktail hour and our student photographers were on hand to take photos of all the teams!  We were also fortunate to have some of our 2016 Grant Recipients on hand to explain what this means to the students.

The Golf Classic is an important event for us to raise funds to provide enriched learning opportunities for the students of the Prairie Spirit School Division.  We are fortunate to have the amazing partners we had this year.  THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

If you are interested in partnering with us for the 2018 Golf Classic, please contact Denise at psfoundation@spiritsd.ca
